Minutes from GUSA AGM held 18/03/09 for your perusal. (I have cut some things, like the number of votes things got, to make them easier to read but if anyone wants to see the unammended version message me and I will forward them to you)
Glasgow University Sports Association AGM 18th March 2010
Present GUSA Council (outgoing and elect), representatives from clubs, SRS members
President's Report
The success of GUSA was reflected by the block grant we receive being increased by £7000 this year whilst the other student bodies funding was frozen.
Club membership has increased this year as well as the addition of two new clubs to GUSA- cycling and kendo.
After a number of serious incidents last year GURFC was disbanded. This led to a recreational league being set up and a new member of staff joining us as rugby development officer. This year has given us an opportunity to expand rugby throughout the university and has led to higher student participation in the sport.
After last years successful lobbying campaign with the SRC Graham Caie passed a paper to the university court and senate asking that Wednesday afternoons be free of compulsory classes, this needs to be monitored but can be seen as a giant leap forward.
Fresher's Week 2009 was a great success with record numbers at the sports fair and the black and gold party at capacity on the Wednesday night. The helpers were exceptional and the week was excellent on the whole.
The GUSA newsletter was published at the beginning of the year but unfortunately no other issues were distributed, we aim to have frequent issues in the coming year.
This year we formed a relationship with GUST who filmed a lot of our events including the GUSA Ball and Fresher's Week activities. We would like to thank them as this was a great way to publicise sport.
Fundraising for the year has gone extremely well, through sponsorship from O'Couture and the Naked Calendar we have managed to raise £5000 for our fundraising pot.
A big issue for GUSA this year has been the minibuses. There have been a number of crashes this year and as a result one of the buses has been written off. Bus replacement will be one of the first things to be dealt with this year as well as reviewing the test procedures.
This year an Alumni network was set up to keep connections open between old and new club members. Tom will be working more on this in the coming year.
This years GUSA ball was a big success and Stephen congratulated Nell, Alex and Leo on what a good job they did with the organisation. This year's ball broke even after an increase in the ticket price and was a highlight of the year.
This year the university did extremely well in the BUCS championships ending with 4 individual gold medals in Boxing, Trampolining, Climbing and Karate, the volleyball men winning the BUCS trophy, the football men and volleyball women as BUCS trophy runners-up and the swimming team winning the shield.
This year's City of Glasgow cup was held at Scotstoun Leisure Centre and was expanded to include 10 sports. Strathclyde narrowly won the competition but it was a great day for all and next year should be an even bigger success.
It has been an outstanding year for GUSA and Stephen would like to thank all outgoing members of the council, the senior members of the council and the SRS staff for all their hard work and also wishes the incoming council the best of luck with the coming year.
Honorary Treasurer's Report
GUSA has operated at a small deficit for the year of £5251.
Income was £213,000 - the main elements being the University grant of £207k and a sundry income of £6k.
Expenditure (funds distributed to support clubs and individuals and to pay central costs and depreciation) was £218,000. The main elements of cost were coaching, travel, accommodation, equipment, entry fees, insurance, affiliation and insurance. Due to more of our clubs progressing further in BUCS leagues, more money has been spent on accommodation and travel. This has resulted in the small deficit.
Reserves remain strong at £193,000 of which £112,000 is cash backed. The reserve allows for the replacement of minibuses and for the council to devise special plans and schemes.
Despite showing a small loss, Jack is satisfied with the year overall.
The new council is as follows:
President-Elect - Leo Howes Vice President Clubs- Connor McBratney Vice President Recreational Sport- Eilidh Menzies Secretary- Karen Byars Finance Convenor- Andy Bryce Travel Convenor- Dave Entwistle elected Publicity Convenor- Christopher Wilson Fundraising and Outreach Convenor- Bex Hewitt Property & Alumni Convenor- Tom Harley Recreation Convenor- Josh Mihill Ordinary Members- Steph Collins, Chris Millar, Stuart Law, Mannix O'Boyle, Rebecca White
